(Charlotte Observer) Students in North Carolina will take about two dozen new tests this school year, including first-ever social studies exams in elementary and middle school, as part of the state’s quest to rate teacher quality using student scores.
It’s the first step toward a system where all students are tested in all subjects and teacher evaluations are based partly on the gains those students make. The changes are part of a plan the state laid out to get federal Race to the Top money, but this year’s tests come with some unexpected costs for local districts.
