(The Sylva Herald) WestCare physicians are demanding either the affiliation agreement with Haywood Regional Medical Center be scrapped or that the hospitals in Jackson and Swain counties be given more local control.

The requests come in a letter WestCare staff sent last week to the board overseeing the two hospitals in Sylva and Bryson City, MedWest-Harris and MedWest-Swain. The letter states that the physicians at the two hospitals do not believe MedWest, at least as originally conceived, is the structure best suited for the hospitals’ success, said John Young, western regional vice president for Carolinas Healthcare System and the interim CEO for MedWest-Haywood hospital.

MedWest was formed in January 2010 with the affiliation of WestCare (Harris and Swain hospitals) and Haywood Regional Medical Center. Carolinas HealthCare System was contracted to supply management services.
