(Asheville Citizen Times) The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners turned back a second effort Tuesday to prohibit discrimination against county employees on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
A motion by Commissioner Holly Jones to allow a vote on adding nondiscrimination language to a new county personnel ordinance died for lack of a second.
Jones said Tuesday she was “hoping for a change of heart” on the board.
The board had considered the issue Aug. 7 and voted 3-2 not to add protections for gay and lesbian workers to the ordinance.
The board adopted the new personnel ordinance 4-1 on the second and final vote Tuesday, with Jones opposed. It eliminates some policy disparities between newer and longtime county workers.
