(Greensboro News and Record) First, Guilford County Register of Deeds Jeff Thigpen sued some of the nation’s largest banks for forging financial documents.

Now Thigpen, along with four other N.C. registers of deeds, is questioning the tax exemption for government-backed mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Guilford County has joined Caldwell, Davie, Davidson and Duplin counties in asking Attorney General Roy Cooper to review the state law that lets the Federal National Mortgage Association and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corp. — more commonly known as Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — avoid local and state excise taxes on land transactions.
