(Asheville Citizen Times) When it comes to county managers and compensation, mountain counties essentially have to pay to play — and throw in some bonuses or other “nonsalary compensation” to keep top talent.

The three largest Western North Carolina counties by population offer these compensation packages to their top managers:

• Buncombe County Manager Wanda Greene collects $10,744 in longevity pay in addition to her $214,822 salary, as well as an 8 percent contribution to her 401(k) retirement plan.
